## Fi1m on Marie-Laure Dougnac

> Marie-Laure Dougnac makes tenderness credible amid *Delicatessen*'s grotesque comedy. We value her lack of fuss: this is a performance that gives a crowded, sometimes exhausting film a romance worth caring about.

In *Delicatessen* (1991), the butcher's short-sighted, cello-playing daughter has to make a love story matter among people whose behaviour would discourage most romantic hopes. Marie-Laure Dougnac plays Julie Clapet without fuss, and the film needs that more than it needs another oddity. Directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro give her grotesque surroundings; she gives them a person whose feelings count. We were moved by Julie's tenderness towards Louison, because Dougnac makes their affection credible without pretending the nastiness around them has gone away.

Dominique Pinon's Louison, a former clown, supplies the physical comedy and an innocence that keeps the cruelty bearable. Dougnac works well beside him because she takes the romance seriously without demanding that the whole film become solemn. Jean-Claude Dreyfus makes Clapet a blunt threat, and the contrast helps her gentleness register without a great deal of emphasis. Some of the supporting eccentrics grow tiresome; the central couple are a welcome reason to keep watching. In a film so busy being peculiar, we appreciate an actor who does not insist on a separate little turn.

A cameo in Jeunet's short *Foutaises* (1989) preceded the notice she gained with *Delicatessen*, but that breakthrough did not establish a career of leading live-action parts. Her subsequent film and television work has been mainly in supporting roles, including Lydie in *Au petit Marguery* (1995) and Véra in *Alice* (2019). Since the 1990s, she has also specialised in French dubbing of English-language films and series. Her clear, light voice suits youthful or energetic characters, a less visible use of an actor's skills.

That career deserves to be considered on its own terms, rather than treated as a failure to repeat an early success. Our strongest reason to seek Dougnac out remains Julie: a performance that makes us care about a romance in an otherwise cheerfully unpleasant film. Start with *Delicatessen*, with the caveat that its quieter pleasures occasionally have to wait for the neighbours to finish.
