We were frightened by her because the panic remains believable even when the film allows almost nothing else. It is demanding work, keeping that distress credible for so long. Calling it a screaming part would hardly be wrong, but it would miss how much the film needs us to believe her.

Sally was her first lead, and it became the part by which her work was chiefly known. Marilyn Burns was an American actress. Born Mary Lynn Ann Burns in Erie, Pennsylvania, she was raised in Houston, Texas, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in drama from the University of Texas at Austin.

She is best known for portraying Sally Hardesty in *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre* (1974). Her other credits include *Eaten Alive* (1976), *Helter Skelter* (1976) as Linda Kasabian, and cameo appearances in *The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre* (1995) and *Texas Chainsaw 3D* (2013). She also appeared in *Brewster McCloud* (1970) and *The Great Waldo Pepper* (1975).

Burns died in Houston, Texas, on 5 August 2014.
