## Biography

Mario Socrate (1920–2012) was an Italian writer, poet and screenwriter. Born and died in Rome, he wrote screenplays for films including *Achtung! Banditi!* (1951), *La strada lunga un anno* (1958) and *Il gobbo* (1960). He also appeared as Giovanni Battista in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s *The Gospel According to St. Matthew* (1964).

A Hispanist and translator from Spanish, French and Russian, Socrate published poetry and fiction with Feltrinelli and Garzanti. His collection *Punto di vista* (1985) won the Premio Viareggio. He was professor emeritus at Roma Tre University, co-founded the magazine *Città aperta* and was the son of painter Carlo Socrate.
