## Fi1m on Mark Brotherhood

> Mark Brotherhood spent a decade writing other people's programmes before he wrote his own, and *Ludwig* shows what the apprenticeship taught him: a clean puzzle every week, a joke where the sentiment might go, and a leading man used exactly as built.

A man who sets puzzles for a living is put in a police station full of officers who believe he is his twin brother, a detective, and there is a body to account for before anyone looks at him too closely. That is *Ludwig* (2024), and it is Mark Brotherhood's whole method in one room: take a person who cannot cope with people, hand him a problem he can cope with, and let the comedy come from the gap between the two. He wrote it with David Mitchell in mind, and our review said Mitchell had been waiting his whole career for a part this shape. Brotherhood had been waiting most of his to write it.

He got in the slow way. Ten years of nights in a call centre, then the BBC Writersroom open calls around 2009 and 2010, then a first commission, a children's series for CBBC in 2014. Around it, the trade: episodes of *Shameless* (2012–2013), *Hollyoaks*, *Benidorm*, *Cold Feet*, one *Death in Paradise* (2015), some *Father Brown*. Our *Shameless* review does not mention him, which is the correct fate of a good staff writer on someone else's series. The long stretch was *Mount Pleasant*, seven years from 2012, where he went from writing episodes to running the programme, and where by his own account he learned to put a joke and a sad moment side by side and make each land harder for the other.

What works in *Ludwig* is the structure, and the structure is continuing-drama craft applied to a detective show. Six episodes, each with a body, a room of suspects and a solution, and under all six the question of what happened to the brother. You can drop in on any week and still be rewarded for watching in order. We laughed, most weeks, at the sight of an anxious, exacting man being made to run a briefing he would rather have hidden from, and the laugh comes from patience: Brotherhood lets his hero be wrong about people for a long time before letting him be right about the case.

What does not work is the same skill turned off. We scored the first series 76 and said it was gentler than it needs to be, and that the brother who vanished in episode one is forgotten for hours at a time. A writer who spent seven years keeping a serial ticking over knows exactly how to do that, and has chosen not to, because the ticking would spoil the puzzle. Brotherhood has said of the show, "It's really quite the formula of what 'cosy crime' is: eccentric outsider solves puzzles. We've got right down to the essence." He is right, and he says it as a boast. Knowing the recipe exactly is not the same as improving it.

A second series arrived in 2026 and a third is commissioned, so the run is his. The question is not whether he can keep it up; *Mount Pleasant* says he can. It is whether he wants to write anything a detective cannot solve.
