## Fi1m on Mark Duplass

> Mark Duplass makes ordinary company interesting, particularly when friendliness becomes uncomfortable. We rate his conversational ease and awkward charm, though he returns to the familiar everyman a little too often.

In *Backrooms* (2026), Mark Duplass turns up as Phil while the hum of strip lights and the damp yellow carpet are doing much of the frightening. We felt relieved when he appeared, because his presence briefly eased the oppressive atmosphere of the maze. It is a small contribution, and we would not pretend it repairs a film that eventually explains away too much of its fear. But it is a useful introduction to an actor whose ordinary, approachable manner can be reassuring, and whose horror work finds something troublesome in that same familiarity.

His early filmmaking with Jay Duplass on *The Puffy Chair* (2005) and *Baghead* (2008) established his preference for small-scale stories and naturalistic performances. The ensemble comedy of *The League* (2009–2015) brought wider recognition, without making the intimate films disappear from his work. As Ethan in *The One I Love* (2014), he is particularly good at the give and take of conversation. We value that sense of someone responding to another person, though the repeated everyman roles can become too familiar.

*Creep* (2014) and *Creep 2* (2017), co-written with director Patrick Brice, put that awkwardness to more unsettling use. His Josef is oddly likeable as well as menacing, which gives the found-footage horror something to work with beyond the format itself. Brice is a productive collaborator because the charm and discomfort are both allowed to remain. The reservation is that the premises and found-footage devices can be conventional; Duplass’s presence does not make every choice surprising.

*Tammy* (2014), in which he plays Bobby, offers little reason to follow him indiscriminately. Ben Falcone’s comedy is slack, with weak jokes and clumsy serious scenes, despite the warmth Melissa McCarthy brings to it. We would not recommend it for Duplass’s presence, just as we would not mistake the brief relief he supplies in *Backrooms* for a solution to that film’s excessive explanations. He is worth seeking out in films that make room for conversation, but the script still has to give him something worth saying. Start with *The One I Love*, then try *Creep* if he has begun to seem too reassuring.

## Biography

Mark Duplass is an American actor, filmmaker and musician. Born on 7 December 1976 in New Orleans, Louisiana, he founded Duplass Brothers Productions with his brother Jay in 1996. The company produced their early features, including *The Puffy Chair* (2005), *Baghead* (2008), *Cyrus* (2010), *Jeff, Who Lives at Home* (2011) and *The Do-Deca-Pentathlon* (2012).

Duplass co-wrote and starred in the horror films *Creep* (2014) and *Creep 2* (2017), as well as the spin-off series *The Creep Tapes* (2024). His other acting credits include *Safety Not Guaranteed* (2012), *The One I Love* (2014), *Tully* (2018), *Paddleton* (2019) and *Language Lessons* (2021). On television he appeared in *The League* (2009–2015), *Togetherness* (2015–2016) and *The Morning Show* (2019–present), receiving two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for the latter.

He plays Phil in the 2026 film *Backrooms*.
