## Fi1m on Mark Fergus

> We value Mark Fergus most when his complicated genre stories give us someone worth following. *Iron Man* gets that right with humour and clarity; *The Expanse* makes its convincing setting needlessly difficult to enter.

The equipment in *Iron Man* (2008) gets close attention; Stark’s abrasive humour is what makes us want to stay. Mark Fergus shares the screenplay credit with Hawk Ostby, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Between them, they explain the man and his abilities clearly enough for the action to matter. Jon Favreau’s attention to the actors and Robert Downey Jr.’s performance deserve much of the credit for how easily it plays. We warmed to Stark because Downey makes him funny without making him agreeable.

The move towards personal material came with *First Snow* (2006), which Fergus directed and wrote with Ostby after early scripts spent chasing market trends. He also co-wrote *Children of Men* (2006), before moving to superhero origins with *Iron Man*. Ostby’s long-term partnership matters to any assessment of this work: these stories are developed together, through outlines, drafts and revisions. We can trace Fergus’s interests through those collaborations without pretending that every good line, or every awkward explanation, belongs to him.

*The Expanse* (2015), which Fergus created with Ostby, gives those interests a larger setting and a less welcoming introduction. The mixture of space drama, mystery and political intrigue has enough seriousness and detail to reward an appetite for this kind of science fiction. But its tangled opening asks us to follow several stories before giving us a clear reason to care about them. Heavy explanations make meeting the inhabitants harder than it should be. The cast helps, but this is a recommendation for the interested, not an easy way into the genre.

*Iron Man* is clear about Stark’s capabilities and much less searching about the power and responsibility that come with them. The humour survives, but the equipment receives attention that the questions surrounding its use do not. In *The Expanse*, there is plenty to consider and too much introductory work before we have much attachment to the people. Start with *Iron Man*, accepting the routine fighting; save *The Expanse* for an evening when following complicated political science fiction sounds like a pleasure.
