## Fi1m on Mark Heap

> Mark Heap makes anxious people funny without treating them as fools. We rate him most when a character is struggling to seem plausible; merely being the oddest person present gives him less to do.

As Brian Topp in *Spaced* (1999), Mark Heap makes discomfort funny without suggesting that the person feeling it deserves our contempt. He is good at letting us notice how hard a character is trying, even when the attempt is hopeless. We felt protective of Brian because Heap lets the awkwardness hurt a little, rather than treating him as a convenient source of jokes. That sympathy matters in a comedy so busy with film references. Heap gives us someone worth watching when the cleverness threatens to get in the way.

His television work in the 1990s included sketch comedy and collaborations with Chris Morris, and *Brass Eye* (1997) shows how much he can do by holding back. As Simon Hottrin, Dr. Zeus Spofforth and others, Heap makes the effort to sound plausible part of the joke. His restraint gives Morris's forcefulness something to work against. We can tire of the programme's sustained aggression, but Heap never seems to be competing for our attention. The names are ridiculous enough without an actor insisting that we notice.

The barefoot gymnastics in *Big Train* (1998) belong to the more conspicuously physical side of his work. Yet physical skill does not oblige him to dominate a scene, and *Spaced* makes particularly good use of that. Alongside Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes, he helps keep the comedy affectionate even when Edgar Wright overworks a film reference. Nick Frost's Mike Watt offers a useful contrast: his directness makes Heap's discomfort funnier. Neither performance needs us to recognise another film before a joke can land.

His later sitcom parts include Dr Alan Statham, the pompous, obsessive consultant in *Green Wing* (2004), and Jim Bell, the eccentric neighbour in *Friday Night Dinner* (2011). Those parts also suggest the danger of becoming the dependable choice whenever a script needs somebody odd. If strangeness is the whole brief, the doubts and efforts that make Heap interesting can be lost. We would rather see him given something specific to worry about. Start with *Spaced*; leave *Brass Eye* for an evening when sustained aggression sounds like a reasonable prospect.
