## Biography

Mark Medoff was an American playwright, screenwriter, director and professor. He wrote the play *Children of a Lesser God*, which premiered in 1979 and opened on Broadway in 1980, winning the Tony Award for Best Play. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1986 film adaptation with Hesper Anderson.

Medoff was born on 18 March 1940 in Mount Carmel, Illinois, and raised in Miami Beach, Florida. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and a master’s from Stanford University. From 1966 he taught at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces for more than fifty years. His other screenplays include *Good Guys Wear Black* (1978), *Clara’s Heart* (1988) and *City of Joy* (1992). He died on 23 April 2019 in Las Cruces.
