## Biography

Mark Peploe was a British screenwriter and film director. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1943, he studied philosophy, politics and economics at Magdalen College, Oxford, before working as a researcher on documentaries.

He wrote the screenplay for Michelangelo Antonioni’s *The Passenger* (1975) and collaborated extensively with Bernardo Bertolucci, his brother-in-law, on *The Last Emperor* (1987), *The Sheltering Sky* (1990) and *Little Buddha* (1993). For *The Last Emperor*, co-written with Bertolucci, he shared the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Peploe also wrote *High Season* (1987) with his sister Clare Peploe and directed the features *Afraid of the Dark* (1991) and *Victory* (1996).

He died in Florence, Italy, on 18 June 2025.
