On the basketball court in *One Tree Hill* (2003), two half-brothers carry their family rivalry into a contest that already matters too much to them. Mark Schwahn gives their teenage unhappiness a practical focus: winning, fitting in and getting noticed. We felt for the brothers because the series takes that need to be noticed seriously. It understands how a young person's immediate worries can occupy the whole day, leaving little room for anything else. The resulting soap is conventional but has enough feeling to reward an interest in its familiar troubles. Schwahn began as the writer-director of *35 Miles from Normal* (1997), with screenwriting credits including *Whatever It Takes* (2000) and *Coach Carter* (2005). A grander setting need not change his priorities, but we would still want the same thing from the writing: people who can surprise us after their grievances have been established.
