## Biography

Marlon Troy Riggs (3 February 1957 – 5 April 1994) was an American filmmaker, educator and poet. He directed, produced, wrote, edited and photographed the experimental documentary *Tongues Untied* (1989), in which he also appeared.

Riggs graduated from Harvard University in 1978 and received a master's degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1981. He became the youngest tenured professor in the arts and humanities at Berkeley. His other documentaries include *Ethnic Notions* (1986), *Color Adjustment* (1992) and *Black Is... Black Ain't* (1994). His work examined representations of race and sexuality in the United States. The Marlon Riggs Collection is held at Stanford University Libraries.
