## Biography

Martin Richards (born Morton Richard Klein; 11 March 1932 – 26 November 2012) was an American film and theatre producer. Born in the Bronx, New York City, he began his career as a child performer before working as a casting director and then moving into production.

He produced the original Broadway production of the musical *Chicago* in 1975 and the 2002 film adaptation, for which he received the Academy Award for Best Picture. Other film credits include *The Boys from Brazil* (1978), *The Shining* (1980, as associate producer) and *Fort Apache, the Bronx* (1981). On Broadway he produced multiple Tony Award-winning musicals, including *Sweeney Todd* (1979), *La Cage aux Folles* (1984) and *The Will Rogers Follies* (1991).

With his wife, Mary Lea Johnson Richards, he co-founded the Producer Circle Company.
