## Fi1m on Masato Hagiwara

> Masato Hagiwara can unsettle a scene by seeming only half aware of it. His evasive performance in *Cure* is the clearest reason to seek him out, though his work extends well beyond quiet menace.

In *Cure* (1997), Masato Hagiwara asks for information he has already been given, without making it clear whether he understood it. As Mamiya, he leaves Koji Yakusho’s detective with little to work with and plenty to find irritating. Yakusho shows the effort of staying patient, while Hagiwara gives him scant encouragement to continue. We grew anxious as Mamiya kept asking about identity, leaving the detective struggling to conduct his own interview.

Early attention came through the lead in *Marks* (1995) and Mamiya in *Cure*, following youth dramas and supporting parts such as *A Class to Remember* (1993). But the subsequent film work does not all ask for menace. *Out of This World* (2004) casts him as a jazz vocalist and saxophonist for Junji Sakamoto, while *Café Lumière* (2004) places him in Hou Hsiao-hsien’s quieter observational drama. His understated contribution to the latter fits Hou’s patient attention to people.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa gives the unease time to develop in *Cure*, and editor Kan Suzuki is crucial to its effect. Conversations persist after they seem to have exhausted their use, allowing Hagiwara’s evasions to become aggravating as well as frightening. Gary Ashiya’s sparse score leaves room for oppressive mechanical noise, so Hagiwara need not force menace into every line. His stillness works because the film lets us watch someone else try to deal with it.

Voice work provides another way to hear what he can do. In *Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor* (2007), he voices the desperate gambler Kaiji Itō; *One Outs* (2008) gives him the calculating pitcher and gambler Tōa Tokuchi. His gravelly delivery makes room for agitation as well as calculation. These roles belong to an extensive television and voice career running alongside the films, rather than an occasional diversion from them.

The caveat is patience: *Cure* keeps Hagiwara withholding the clear signals that would make his interviews easier to read. The repetition can be trying, even when its purpose is clear. We would not trade his vagueness for a more demonstrative performance. Start with *Cure*, provided an actor refusing to make himself easy to understand sounds like a reason to keep watching.
