Born in Florence, he trained at the acting school founded by Giorgio Strehler in Milan. He made his film debut in Federico Fellini’s *Giulietta degli spiriti* (1965) and went on to appear in works by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the Taviani brothers and Marco Bellocchio. His screen credits include the blind man in *The Conformist* (1970), the innkeeper in *Ladyhawke* (1985), Nino in *Under the Tuscan Sun* (2003) and Franco in *Miracle at St. Anna* (2008). He also directed and wrote *Anna* (1975).
