## Fi1m on Mathieu Amalric

> Mathieu Amalric makes thought visible through small changes of expression, and makes even extravagant behaviour feel plausible. We rate him highly, but a crowded ensemble can leave too little time for his acting to register.

In *The Diving Bell and the Butterfly* (2007), Mathieu Amalric conveys emotion as Jean-Dominique Bauby through minimal physical movement. Small changes of expression are enough to suggest a thought being worked through. We rate him for that ability to make close attention worthwhile, without a speech explaining every feeling. It is an especially clear example of what he can do when a film gives him time and trusts us to watch.

His breakthrough, *My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument* (1996), established the long collaboration with director Arnaud Desplechin that also includes *Kings and Queen* (2004). The comedy, drama and autobiography in their work give him room for less restrained behaviour, too. In *Ismael's Ghosts* (2017), he makes extravagant behaviour feel plausible. Desplechin is the essential director to follow here, because treating Amalric as a specialist in quiet intensity misses much of what he does.

*Munich* (2005), in which he plays Louis, marks his move into international productions. We recommend Steven Spielberg's tense, disturbing thriller, though its screenplay sometimes explains doubts that Eric Bana has already made painful to watch. It is a good introduction to Amalric's international work, rather than the place to look for a sustained leading performance. His career has continued to make room for French auteur films alongside these international parts.

*The Phoenician Scheme* (2025) makes the limitation sharper: Wes Anderson casts him as Marseille Bob, a nightclub owner, then keeps the procession of business meetings moving. Editor Barney Pilling cuts each visit briskly, but the supporting players have too little time to become people. We grew impatient as the repeated arrivals, refusals and departures left us counting how many meetings remained. There is enough humour, and enough in Benicio del Toro's performance, to recommend the film with that reservation; Marseille Bob gets too little time to make it a useful introduction to Amalric. For more time with him, start with *My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument*.

## Biography

Mathieu Amalric is a French actor and filmmaker. Born on 25 October 1965 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, he first appeared in films in the mid-1980s and rose to prominence in French cinema with roles in Arnaud Desplechin's *Comment je me suis disputé... (ma vie sexuelle)* (1996) and *Rois et reine* (2004).

Internationally, he is known for supporting parts in Steven Spielberg's *Munich* (2005), as the villain Dominic Greene in *Quantum of Solace* (2008), Serge X. in Wes Anderson's *The Grand Budapest Hotel* (2014), and Marseille Bob in *The Phoenician Scheme* (2025). He has also appeared in Anderson's *The French Dispatch* (2021) and other films including *Sound of Metal* (2020). Amalric has received several César Awards and has directed features such as *Tournée* (2010).
