He made his stage debut in 1945 at the age of three and later took the name Ichikawa Somegorō VI. He succeeded to the name Matsumoto Kōshirō IX in 1981 and assumed his current name in 2018. A graduate of Waseda University, he has performed in kabuki, Western stage productions, film and television. His film roles include Yukie Makino in *13 Assassins* (2010), Uzuki's father in *April Story* (1998) and the voice of Hitsujirō Munakata in *Suzume* (2022). He appeared in the lead role in *Man of La Mancha* on Broadway in 1970.
