## Fi1m on Matt Czuchry

> Matt Czuchry plays confident men who arrived with advantages, and the point of him is the moment the confidence gives way. He is at his best in an ensemble, where the job is listening, and *The Good Wife* gave him seven seasons of it.

Matt Czuchry walks into a scene looking as though he has already won it. That is the type he has played for twenty years: the young man with money or prospects who has not yet been told no. The reason to watch him is what he does when the no arrives. He does not go big. The face stays roughly where it was and something behind it gives, and if the camera is on someone else at that moment, you miss it.

He started with guest parts, in *Freaks and Geeks* (1999) and *Young Americans* (2000), and got his break as Logan Huntzberger in *Gilmore Girls* (2004–2007), a recurring role that became a regular one. Logan is the rich boy in Rory's rotation of boyfriends, and our review found that rotation going round in circles, the argument much the same each time. Plenty of viewers took against him, which is roughly what the part was for. Czuchry has said of the show: "Before that show, I really didn't know what the hell I was doing; and after, I knew a little bit more of what I was doing." Watching Logan, you can see him learning: the charm is there from the first scene, and the doubt underneath it arrives later.

The doubt is what he brought to Cary Agos in *The Good Wife* (2009–2016). Cary competes with Alicia for one permanent job at the firm, and our review said the writing was fair to him, which it did not have to be. The performance repays that fairness. Cary could have been the smooth boy who exists to lose; Czuchry plays him as someone who wants the job as much as she does and has had less practice at not getting things. Our honest reaction, over seven seasons, is that we kept wanting the camera to stay on him a beat longer than it did, because in a room full of lawyers talking he is the one whose listening tells you how the argument is going. It is small work and it is the best thing he has done.

*The Resident* (2018–2023) moved the type to the centre of the frame, with Czuchry as Conrad Hawkins, a doctor whose ethical arguments are now his to have rather than to lose. We have not reviewed it and will not judge it here. He went back to Logan for *Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life* (2016) and took a part in *American Horror Story* (2023–2024), which is neither a legal drama nor a medical one.

Start with *The Good Wife*, and watch him when Margulies is talking. He was born in 1977, and the young man who has not yet been told no cannot be played for ever; whatever he does next will show whether the listening was the talent or the part.
