## Fi1m on Matthew Goode

> Matthew Goode is good at finding something sly beneath polished manners. In *Dept. Q*, we value his comic timing just as much: he makes a bad-tempered detective worth watching without pretending he would be pleasant company.

In *Dept. Q* (2025), Matthew Goode makes DCI Carl Morck’s bad temper funny without making him easy company. We laughed at the team’s exchanges because his complaints give the other performers something to react to, rather than reducing them to an audience. He can dominate without making his colleagues seem unnecessary. It is good ensemble acting from someone playing a man who makes teamwork difficult. It also shows how useful Goode can be when he is not required to make an agreeable first impression.

His breakthrough lead in the romantic comedy *Chasing Liberty* (2004) offered a more straightforward use for his charm. Supporting roles followed in *Match Point* (2005) and *Watchmen* (2009), while he played Jim in Tom Ford’s *A Single Man* (2009). Television brought Henry Talbot in *Downton Abbey* (2015), then Tony Armstrong-Jones in *The Crown* (2017). The persistent casting idea has been the articulate, well-bred man with something less settled beneath the manners. Goode’s subtle slyness gives that familiar figure a reason to hold our attention.

The risk with such casting is repetition: another intelligent man whose manners do much of the introductory work. Goode is more interesting when the charm is held back, as it is with Morck, and he has to keep us watching through the grumbling. Scott Frank and his fellow writers help by putting him in an Edinburgh cold-case unit with other difficult people. Their exchanges give his comic timing a purpose beyond making the leading man likeable, and leave the supporting cast room to matter.

The reservation is that *Dept. Q* sometimes seems too pleased with Morck’s capacity to be difficult. Its nine episodes also take longer over the case than they need to, particularly in the middle, and an engaging lead cannot supply a firmer cut. Goode gets the balance mostly right, but the writing occasionally mistakes another display of bad temper for something worth lingering over. Start here if the company in a crime drama matters as much as the solution; if abrasive detectives have already exhausted your patience, he may not restore it.
