## Fi1m on Maurice Dean Wint

> Maurice Dean Wint is persuasive as a man others might follow, and more interesting when that looks unwise. We rate his uneasy authority in *Cube*, though the ensemble sometimes presses its distress too hard.

In *Cube* (1998), Maurice Dean Wint's Quentin has to compete for our attention with a maze of lethal rooms. It is an awkward assignment: keep a personality clear while the audience is busy trying to understand the traps. Wint helps make the human exchanges worth following, because trusting another person can seem scarcely safer than entering another room. We felt uneasy about Quentin because dependence on someone whose judgement looks doubtful gives the puzzle a recognisable human danger.

That authority is not the whole of his work, but it is a recurring reason to cast him. Lead roles in *Rude* (1995) and *Curtis's Charm* (1995) brought him notice before *Cube*, with General in the former and Curtis in the latter. His later screen work has leaned towards recurring and guest television parts, alongside voice acting and occasional films. Science fiction, horror and procedural drama repeatedly find a use for his intensity.

Vincenzo Natali's *Cube* is a good place to see both the value and the limits of that approach. Alongside Nicole De Boer, Nicky Guadagni and David Hewlett, Wint must help keep the changing loyalties clear while the puzzle demands attention. The ensemble does not always manage it: the acting can grow too broad, and some exchanges continue after we have understood the disagreement. The strain is sometimes underlined when the rooms have already made it plain. Even so, these actors give us reasons to worry beyond the next trap, and their doubtful judgements help keep a resourceful thriller tense.

In *SurrealEstate* (2021), his regular role as August Ripley, a technology specialist and voice of wisdom, puts that authority to a more reassuring use. It makes sense as another kind of casting for Wint: the person whose judgement others seek, rather than the person whose judgement worries us. For a first encounter, choose *Cube*, allowing for an ensemble that sometimes works too hard to communicate distress.
