## Biography

Maurice Denham was an English character actor who appeared in over 100 films and television programmes. Born William Maurice Denham on 23 December 1909 in Beckenham, Kent, he trained initially as an engineer before becoming an actor in 1934. He first gained notice through radio comedy series such as It's That Man Again and Much Binding in the Marsh.

Denham made his film debut in 1947 and voiced all the animal characters in the animated feature Animal Farm (1954). His credits include Oliver Twist (1948), Night of the Demon (1957), Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965), The Heroes of Telemark (1965), The Day of the Jackal (1973) as General Colbert, Julia (1977), and 84 Charing Cross Road (1987). He also appeared in Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes (1984). He received the OBE in 1992 and continued working until the late 1990s. Denham died on 24 July 2002 in London.
