## Biography

Maurine Dallas Watkins was an American playwright and screenwriter. She began her career as a journalist covering crime for the Chicago Tribune in 1924, an experience that provided material for her best-known work.

Her play *Chicago* (1926) was a Broadway success and later inspired the 1975 musical of the same name and the 2002 film. She wrote or co-wrote screenplays including *Libeled Lady* (1936) and contributed the story for *I Love You Again* (1940).

Watkins studied at Butler University, Radcliffe College and Yale Drama School. She died in 1969.
