## Biography

Maksim Mikhaylov (also credited as M. Mikhaylov) was a Soviet opera singer (bass-profoundo) and actor. Born on 25 August 1893 in Koltsovka, Kazan Governorate, Russian Empire (now Chuvash Republic, Russia), he began singing in church choirs and trained as a protodeacon of the Russian Orthodox Church before becoming a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre from 1932 to 1956.

He appeared in several films, including as the Archdeacon in Sergei Eisenstein's *Ivan the Terrible, Part I* (1944), Chub in *Slippers* (1945), Petrov in *The Great Glinka* (1946) and Pimen in *Boris Godunov* (1954). Mikhaylov was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1940 and received two Stalin Prizes of the first degree. He died on 30 March 1971 in Moscow.
