Maya Angelou was an American actor, writer and civil rights activist. She played Nyo Boto in the 1977 miniseries *Roots*. Her other screen roles include Aunt June in *Poetic Justice* (1993), Anna in *How to Make an American Quilt* (1995), May in *Madea's Family Reunion* (2006), and Clarice Mitchell in an episode of *Touched by an Angel* (1994).

Angelou published seven autobiographies, three books of essays and several volumes of poetry. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. She was born on 4 April 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, and died on 28 May 2014.
