## Biography

Mayo, also credited as Antoine Mayo or Antoine Malliarakis, was a Greek-French costume designer, production designer and painter. Born in Port Said, Egypt, to a Greek engineer father and French mother, he moved to France as a child and studied architecture in Paris before turning to painting and stage design in avant-garde circles.

Recommended by writer Jacques Prévert, he entered film in 1944 as costume designer on *Children of Paradise* (1945). He went on to design costumes or production for numerous French classics, including *Gates of the Night* (1946), *Casque d'Or* (1952), *Thérèse Raquin* (1953), *Land of the Pharaohs* (1955) and *The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll* (1960). He served as production designer on Alain Resnais’s *Hiroshima Mon Amour* (1959). His film career spanned roughly two decades before he concentrated on painting.
