## Fi1m on Megan Stevenson

> Megan Stevenson's gift is to say a ridiculous thing as though it were plain common sense, and to give nothing away while she does it. On *Review* that stillness is the whole joke; television has not yet found her a lead to match it.

Forrest MacNeil comes back to the sofa having ruined another part of his life, smiles, gives the experience two stars, and A J Gibbs reads the next card without a flicker. That is Megan Stevenson's job on *Review* (2014), for three seasons and twenty-two episodes, and it is harder than it looks. The comedy is in Andrew Daly's disasters; the sadness is in her not reacting to them. We were angry with her by the middle of the first season, and then realised she was the only sane person on screen, and that the anger was the point.

What she does is deliver the absurd as though it were a weather report. She has the sincerity of a proper daytime host, bright and pleasant and unbothered, and she never once winks at us to say she knows better. Many comic actors can be the straight man for a scene; few can hold it for three years while the man beside them comes apart. As the seasons go on Gibbs turns out to have plans of her own, which we will not describe, and Stevenson lets the ambition show only in how much more carefully she smiles. She has said of the co-host's position: "On one hand you’re happy you have a job, but on the other hand of course you want to do more." The performance is built on exactly that.

The career before *Review* was ballet, then communications at Fordham, then sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade, and you can see both ends of that in the work: a dancer's stillness and a sketch player's timing. Guest parts on *30 Rock*, *Californication* and *Franklin & Bash* followed, and a small film role in *Cavemen* (2013). After *Review* came a second long television run as April Quinn in *Get Shorty* (2017 to 2019), twenty-four episodes in a larger comedy-drama ensemble, and a part as Stacy-Lynn in Shane Atkinson's *LaRoy, Texas* (2023). We have not reviewed those and will not pretend to have weighed them.

The one reservation anyone has raised is the obvious one. Her best-known parts are the co-host and the second lead, the woman at the side of the frame while a man does something unwise. That is partly the nature of the gift: a voice of reason needs chaos to be reasonable against. It is also a waste to leave her there. Somebody should write her the disaster and let somebody else read the card.
