## Biography

Mel Bibby (1947–2002) was a production designer who worked primarily for BBC Manchester. He trained at art college and began his career as an assistant on the game show *It's a Knockout*. Over more than twenty years with the BBC he designed for a range of programmes including drama, comedy and light entertainment.

Bibby is best known for his work on the television series *Red Dwarf*, for which he served as production designer from series III (1989) to VIII. He replaced Paul Montague and introduced more detailed and colourful sets, including the Officers' Quarters and the interior of the shuttle *Starbug*. He also worked on *Happy Families* (1985), *Filthy Rich & Catflap* (1987), *Cyberzone* (1993) and other series.

A tribute documentary, *Red Dwarf: Building a Better Universe – A Tribute to Mel Bibby*, was produced in 2003 and included on the DVD release of series III.
