Born Melchor Gastón Ferrer on 25 August 1917 in Elberon, New Jersey, he died on 2 June 2008 in Santa Barbara, California. He began his career in theatre and achieved prominence on Broadway before moving into film. His notable film roles include appearances in *Scaramouche* (1952), *Lili* (1953), *Knights of the Round Table* (1953), *War and Peace* (1956) and *The Longest Day* (1962) as Maj. Gen. Robert Haines. He co-founded the La Jolla Playhouse and was married to actress Audrey Hepburn from 1954 to 1968; he produced her film *Wait Until Dark* (1967).
