## Fi1m on Melanie Oliver

> Melanie Oliver is the editor Tom Hooper, Joe Wright and Matthew Warchus keep returning to for musicals and period pieces: quick on a comic exchange, good at moving a crowd. Asked to hold a dance or a feeling, she tends to cut first.

Watch 'One Day More' in *Les Misérables* (2012). A dozen people are singing to one another and we never see two of them in the same shot. Some of that is Tom Hooper, whose camera sits inches from every face, and some is the co-editor Chris Dickens, but the same habit turns up in *Cats* (2019), where Francesca Hayward dances well enough to hold the screen on her own and the cutting breaks her into glimpses before we can see what she is doing. Melanie Oliver's instinct is to reach the next shot a beat before the last one has finished.

She began on slower films, as an assistant editor on Jane Campion's *An Angel at My Table* (1990) and *The Portrait of a Lady* (1996), then moved to England, cut Joe Wright's short *Crocodile Snap* (1997) and worked in television. Hooper's *Elizabeth I* (2005) and *Longford* (2006) started the partnership that has given her the most work, and *John Adams* (2008) showed its limits as well as its virtues: absorbing over seven episodes, though the conversations did not always move forward enough to tell us what we were waiting for. She has directed too, an episode of *Brassic* (2019).

The virtues are real. *Pride* (2014) is a crowded story and she keeps it moving, so that its 120 minutes feel shorter than they are. *Jane Eyre* (2011) lets the early, wary conversations between Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender develop at their own speed. The comic exchanges in *Bridget Jones's Baby* (2016) are sharper than the romance around them, and the ensemble numbers in *Matilda the Musical* (2022) have an energy the dialogue scenes never find. Give her a crowd and a clock and she is good.

Give her a flashback and she is tidy to a fault. *Judy* (2019) cuts from Renée Zellweger in 1968 to Darci Shaw on the MGM lot in 1939, a pill answered by a pill, on cue every time, and by the third of them we were impatient and stayed impatient to the end, because Zellweger had already shown us everything the flashbacks stop to explain. *Wicked Little Letters* (2024) strings its readings of the letters into montage as if quantity might do the work of wit. *The Danish Girl* (2015) turns its second half into a run of dissolving scenes that play like an expensive photograph album, and *Moana* (2026) follows the 2016 cartoon beat for beat, which is faithful and also the trouble.

Oliver has said of her work, "Everything is about rhythm and I dance from the heart", and the rhythm she keeps is steady and confident and suits a comic line or a march of extras. What her films have lacked, from *Cats* to *Judy*, is a moment where the rhythm stops: a dancer held in a wide shot, one face allowed to carry a scene without another face cutting in to answer it. Hooper, her most frequent director, does not keep the camera still, so she may not often be asked. We would like to see it.
