> Method Man is a persuasive ensemble actor, with comic timing that works without much fuss. We value his ease in a small part, though repeated casting as criminals and hustlers can make a useful performer seem more limited than he is.

Method Man looks at home among other actors, which matters when a familiar musician turns up in a supporting part. His naturalness is useful in comedy and drama; he need not make an entrance feel like a special event. The early roles in *Cop Land* (1997) and *Belly* (1998) gave way to the comic lead of *How High* (2001), alongside Redman. That pairing makes good use of his timing. We rate the actor most when he has people to play against.

In *Garden State* (2004), he plays Diego in Zach Braff's uneven homecoming comedy. His relaxed style is helpful in a film that can seem determined to make every new acquaintance a discovery. Television has given him longer stretches: the recurring Cheese Wagstaff in David Simon's *The Wire* (2002–2008), then the lead role of Davis Maclean in *Power Book II: Ghost* (2020–2024). Cheese remains an important reason to take his dramatic work seriously. The repeated criminal and hustler roles can narrow expectations of an actor whose comic timing deserves more use.
