## Fi1m on Michael Beach

> Michael Beach gives flawed and dangerous men enough humanity to keep us interested in them. We rate him most highly when an ensemble leaves space for those complications, with *One False Move* the clearest reason to seek him out.

In *One False Move* (1992), Michael Beach's Pluto is coldly violent, but he is not interchangeable with the people beside him. Carl Franklin gives the criminal trio distinct personalities, with Cynda Williams's Fantasia supplying much of its emotional weight. Beach helps keep that group interesting when it could have been merely a threat waiting to arrive. We were horrified by the opening brutality, which is pushed further than the film needs, but the attention to these people kept us watching. This is where we rate Beach most highly, working among actors whose characters change how we judge his own.

That breakthrough also narrowed the parts he was offered for a time, a pattern reinforced by his unfaithful husband in *Waiting to Exhale* (1995). Television brought sustained ensemble work: Al Boulet in *ER* (1995–97), then Monte Parker in *Third Watch* (1999–2005). Policemen, fathers and other authority figures recur across his work, alongside the villains. Repeated authority roles can make an actor familiar without giving him much to play; Beach is more interesting when a script allows the flaws to show.

*Saw X* (2023) offers a smaller example of how useful he can be before a film gets down to its advertised business. As Henry Kessler, he describes getting well while Tobin Bell's sick man listens, during the unusually patient opening. Director and editor Kevin Greutert holds back the real traps for close to half an hour, giving this conversation room. We find the film overextended, and Bell is plainly its centre, but Beach has a place in the stretch that gives the suffering some human context.

We do not need Beach to become a leading man to make his work worth following. What we want is more of the patient attention Greutert briefly allows him, in films that know when to stop. Start with *One False Move*, but allow for an opening whose violence is harder to defend than the film that follows.
