## Fi1m on Michael C. Williams

> Michael C. Williams makes fear convincing by leaving room for ordinary irritation. We recommend his work in *The Blair Witch Project* for that unpolished credibility, with a warning that the panic can become repetitive.

Michael C. Williams allows the frightened people in *The Blair Witch Project* (1999) to remain irritating company. Alongside Heather Donahue and Joshua Leonard, he helps make a group whose worsening behaviour feels credible without becoming particularly agreeable. These are people trying to make a documentary, and their conduct around that task gives us a way to measure their slipping composure. Williams leaves the awkwardness in, allowing irritation to occupy space that a tidier horror performance might reserve for alarm. We found their fraying patience unnerving because their annoyance with one another makes the fear feel harder to manage.

Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez get considerable value from that willingness to look unappealing. Using his own name and improvising, Williams helps sustain the pretence that we are watching a documentary. His performance gives us little reason to question the people even when we dislike them, an important contribution to a film built from handheld footage. The limitation is repetition: the panic can wear on us once its rhythms become familiar.

The film was his breakthrough, but the work that followed was sporadic rather than a steady run of leading parts. A guest appearance in *Law & Order* (2000) sits beside supporting roles in *Altered* (2006) and *The Objective* (2008). Television procedurals and horror have supplied much of the subsequent work, with *Satanic Hispanics* (2022) and *Ghost Game* (2024) among the later film credits. That leaves fewer substantial performances to consider than we would want when judging an actor whose breakthrough depended so heavily on seeming ordinary.

We would be wary of treating sporadic work as evidence of limited ability. Williams's clearest achievement is helping sustain a horror film whose people have to convince us before the fear will. His willingness to be disagreeable gives the other performers something useful to work against. For the clearest evidence of what he can do, start with *The Blair Witch Project*.
