Michael Cunningham is an American novelist and screenwriter. Born on 6 November 1952 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he studied English literature at Stanford University and earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

He is best known for his 1998 novel *The Hours*, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1999. His other credits include the novel *A Home at the End of the World* (1990) and screenplays for the film adaptations *Evening* (2007) and *A Home at the End of the World* (2004). He wrote a teleplay for an episode of the series *Masters of Sex* (2013).

Cunningham is professor in the practice of creative writing at Yale University.
