## Fi1m on Michael Gambon

> Michael Gambon makes authority feel physical, whether he is playing a gangster, an executive or an industrialist. We rate him most in company: *Gosford Park* lets his blunt force disturb a whole gathering without making everyone else disappear.

In *Gosford Park* (2001), Michael Gambon gives William McCordle the coarse manners of a man with little reason to improve them. We laughed at how easily he made the surrounding politeness look flimsy. Kristin Scott Thomas’s guarded Sylvia McCordle provides a useful contrast, and Robert Altman lets the difference register without stopping the gathering. Gambon’s force matters because the other actors are allowed their own ways of responding. He makes us notice the restraint as well as the rudeness.

His screen career offers plenty of such authority figures, though *The Singing Detective* (1986) gave a wider audience something more complicated. As Philip Marlow, he had a central role that moved between memory, fantasy and realism, with room for menace and wit. Film work increased from the late 1980s, including Albert Spica, the violent gangster in Peter Greenaway’s *The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover* (1989). Later came Albus Dumbledore, taking over from Richard Harris in *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban* (2004). That part alone is too narrow an introduction to an actor whose authority could be so unpleasant.

*The Insider* (1999) casts him as another powerful man, the ruthless tobacco executive Thomas Sandefur. Michael Mann’s thriller follows a whistle-blower’s struggle to be heard, with Russell Crowe giving the personal risks their weight. Gambon’s commanding delivery is well suited to the corporate side of that struggle, though we would not make his contribution the main reason to watch. The film’s grip comes from the pressure on the man trying to speak, and it remains strong even when Mann labours points already made.

There is a risk with parts like these: menace can become something a casting director orders ready-made. *Gosford Park* gives us more to attend to, since McCordle’s coarseness is measured against the guardedness and politeness of the people around him. The mystery occasionally gets muddled, but Altman’s handling of the ensemble makes it our starting point for Gambon. Follow it with *The Singing Detective* for a central role with room for his wit as well as his menace.

## Biography

Sir Michael Gambon was an Irish-English actor. Born in Cabra, Dublin, on 19 October 1940, he died on 27 September 2023. He began his career in the 1960s as one of the original members of the Royal National Theatre under Laurence Olivier.

Gambon received three Olivier Awards for his stage work, including performances in A Chorus of Disapproval (1985), A View from the Bridge (1987) and Man of the Moment (1990). He appeared in numerous Shakespeare productions and made his Broadway debut in Skylight (1997). He was appointed CBE and knighted for services to drama.

On screen, Gambon played Philip Marlow in the 1986 BBC series The Singing Detective and Thomas Sandefur in the 1999 film The Insider. He portrayed Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films from 2004 to 2011 and appeared in The King's Speech (2010) and Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017). He received four BAFTA TV Awards.
