## Biography

Michael Stringer (1924–2004) was a British production designer and art director. Born John Michael Stringer in Singapore, he studied at Selwyn College, Cambridge, served in the RAF during the Second World War, and entered the film industry after demobilisation as an assistant art director.

His credits include production design on *Casino Royale* (1967) and *A Shot in the Dark* (1964), and art direction on *Fiddler on the Roof* (1971), for which he shared an Academy Award nomination. Other notable films include *633 Squadron* (1964), *Robin and Marian* (1976), *The Mirror Crack'd* (1980) and *The Awakening* (1980). He later worked in television, designing sets for series including *Paradise Postponed* (1986).

Stringer contributed to the textbook *Film Design* (1974) and served as president of the Guild of Film Art Directors. He was twice married and had two daughters.
