## Biography

Michael Wilding was an English stage, television and film actor. Born Michael Charles Gauntlett Wilding on 23 July 1912 in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, he trained as a commercial artist before entering the film industry in 1933 as an extra at a London studio.

He appeared in supporting roles in British films including *In Which We Serve* (1942) and gained prominence through a series of pictures made with Anna Neagle. Wilding also featured in two Alfred Hitchcock films, *Under Capricorn* (1949) as Hon. Charles Adare and *Stage Fright* (1950) as Det. Insp. Wilfried 'Ordinary' Smith, and later worked in Hollywood on titles such as *The Egyptian* (1954) and *The World of Suzie Wong* (1960). His final screen role was in *Lady Caroline Lamb* (1972). He died on 8 July 1979.
