## Fi1m on Michael Winterbottom

> Michael Winterbottom gives actors room to improvise and lets real places shape his films. We value that freedom, though his uneven work makes him a director to follow selectively rather than trust without question.

Robbie Coltrane keeps finding humour in Fitz when the man's excesses threaten to wear us out. We enjoyed his company in *Cracker* (1993) more than we expected, because the laughter gives us some relief from the discomfort. Winterbottom directed the pilot, so we should not credit him with everything the series gets right. It remains a strong recommendation, chiefly for the performance at its centre.

Winterbottom moved from television to a first feature, *Butterfly Kiss* (1995), then to Thomas Hardy with *Jude* (1996). Then *24 Hour Party People* (2002) took him into Manchester music, while *In This World* (2002) used non-professional performers in a docu-drama. The former began an important collaboration with Steve Coogan, giving Winterbottom's loose approach a comic outlet. *A Cock and Bull Story* (2005), adapted from *Tristram Shandy*, kept Coogan involved while making the business of adaptation part of the comedy.

The recurring habits are practical: real locations, a mobile camera and actors often allowed to improvise. Those choices can make people seem to have lives beyond the scene we are watching, though looseness can also leave us wishing for more shape. Regular collaborators include writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce and producer Andrew Eaton, with whom he founded Revolution Films in 1994. Coogan gives the comedies a recognisable point of return amid the changes of subject. There is more continuity in the people he works with than the list of subjects might suggest.

The reservation is already there in *Cracker*: the writing sometimes presses harder than it needs to. Coltrane's humour keeps the programme from becoming merely exhausting, but it cannot make every excess necessary. We want Winterbottom's freedom to come with that sort of judgement about when to stop pushing, and his uneven output makes us cautious about recommending indiscriminately. Start with *Cracker*; try *24 Hour Party People* next if the Manchester music scene interests you.
