## Biography

Michel Brault (25 June 1928 – 21 September 2013) was a Canadian cinematographer, director, screenwriter and producer. He joined the National Film Board of Canada in 1956 and worked on the Candid Eye series. His early collaboration with Gilles Groulx on the short documentary *Les Raquetteurs* (1958) helped establish direct cinema techniques in Quebec.

In 1961 he travelled to France and served as one of the cinematographers on Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin's *Chronicle of a Summer* (Chronique d'un été). He later photographed Claude Jutra's *Mon oncle Antoine* (1971) and Francis Mankiewicz's *Good Riddance* (Les Bons débarras, 1980). Brault directed and photographed the feature *Orders* (Les Ordres, 1974), which shared the best director prize at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival. He received Canadian Film Awards and Genie Awards for his cinematography.
