## Biography

Michelle Alexander is an American writer, attorney and civil rights activist. She is best known for her 2010 book *The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness*.

Born on 7 October 1967 in the United States, Alexander earned a BA from Vanderbilt University and a JD from Stanford University. She has worked as director of the Racial Justice Project at the ACLU of Northern California and as a law clerk for US Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun.

Alexander appeared as herself in the 2016 documentary *13th*, directed by Ava DuVernay, discussing the history of racial disparity and mass incarceration in the United States.
