## Fi1m on Michelle Dockery

> Michelle Dockery plays women who have decided not to show what they feel, and lets us see the cost anyway. It made Lady Mary the best performance in *Downton Abbey*; nothing since has asked quite as much of that held face.

Watch Michelle Dockery when somebody gives her bad news. Nothing moves. The chin stays up, the eyes stay level, and when the voice comes it is a shade quieter than before. Then, a beat later than you expect, one small thing gives: a look at the floor, a breath taken too early. She has built a career on that beat. In *Downton Abbey* (2010) Mary Crawley is a clever young woman who knows exactly how narrow her options are, and Dockery plays the anger the period allows her, which is almost none, so it comes out as stillness.

She trained at Guildhall, leaving in 2004, and was on stage at the National Theatre in *His Dark Materials* and on television in *Fingersmith* and *Cranford* before Julian Fellowes gave her Mary. Six series followed, from 2010 to 2015, and then three films, in 2019, 2022 and 2025. She has said of the part, "I know how to do this. I know who she is," and nothing since has fitted her as well. When the series ended she went to America: *Good Behavior* (2016–2017) had her as Letty Raines, a con artist and an addict; *Godless* (2017) put her in a western as Alice Fletcher for Scott Frank; and in *The Gentlemen* (2020) Guy Ritchie let her play Rosalind Pearson in the Essex voice she grew up with.

We have not reviewed the American work, so we will say only that the reviews of *Good Behavior* were surer of the actress than of the accent, and that the physical work in *Godless* is what people remember. The case rests on Downton, which we have reviewed twice. In 2010 she had the harder part and gave the better performance, in a cast that included Maggie Smith. In *Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale* (2025), a film we found comfortable and thin, she carries the one plot with any weight: Mary is divorced, the invitations stop, and friends look at the floor. Simon Curtis and Fellowes treat this as the real humiliation it would have been, and Dockery plays it with the composure she spent six series perfecting. When it cracks, it moved us more than a sixth goodbye to these people had any right to, because she has kept the face so still for so long that a break in it reads as an injury.

The worry is that she is usually better than what she is in. The parts that want the still face keep coming; the parts that want something else arrive with an accent to worry about. What she needs is a writer who is interested in the cracks rather than the composure, and a director who will hold on her long enough to see them. Fellowes gave her the composure for fifteen years. Somebody else should ask for the rest.
