## Fi1m on Michelle MacLaren

> Michelle MacLaren makes complicated action clear and frightening. We rate her highly for keeping violence and fantasy grounded, with *Breaking Bad* the strongest reason to seek out her work.

In Michelle MacLaren's action scenes, wide lenses give us room to see what is happening. She uses multiple cameras and approaches the staging as a problem to be worked out precisely. We rate her highly for keeping complicated action legible without taking the fear out of it. Even when the material is fantastical, she favours a grounded treatment that makes the danger feel close.

Her directing debut was *John Doe*, a 2002 episode of *The X-Files* written by Vince Gilligan. She joined *Breaking Bad* (2008) in 2009, directed eleven episodes through 2013 and also became an executive producer. *One Minute* (2010) is a useful example of her skill with suspense and set pieces. We found *Breaking Bad* frightening because Walter White keeps finding excuses for himself, and the series makes us listen to them. MacLaren's command of action serves a programme whose chief interest is still the person doing the damage.

The series' cleverness can become a nuisance, and we would not pretend that every flourish is essential. Bryan Cranston remains central to its power, too; there is no sensible way to give one director all the credit for this work. MacLaren's collaborators include Gilligan and cinematographer Michael Slovis. Her particular strength is making violence feel physically credible, so that we worry about what it will do rather than simply note how neatly it has been arranged.

She went on to direct four episodes of *Game of Thrones* in 2013–2014. With the pilot of *The Deuce* (2017), which she also executive produced, she helped establish the programme's 1970s tone and style. That is a different responsibility from joining an established series, and a useful indication of what she can contribute beyond an action sequence. Her television work continued with *Constellation* (2024), again as director and executive producer. Start with *One Minute* if you want to see why her name on an episode is worth noticing.
