In *Performance* (1970), Mick Jagger’s Turner pays attention to people in a way that makes us wish he would leave them alone. He plays a reclusive rock star whose self-possession makes James Fox’s Chas look suddenly less certain of himself. We felt uneasy watching him because he made curiosity seem capable of becoming cruelty without warning.

Co-directors Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg make good use of his tension with Fox, though they also interrupt it too often. Roeg is also the cinematographer, and the film’s restless imagery can grow tiresome when the actors have already made the people difficult to read. Jagger and Fox keep us watching through those passages, which is a substantial achievement in a film so willing to make a nuisance of itself.

A small part such as Greta, the drag queen in *Bent* (1997), makes better use of his voice and physical presence without requiring him to carry the whole film.

Joseph Cassidy in *The Burnt Orange Heresy* (2020) marked a return to a substantial role after nearly two decades. We would not take that as evidence that any leading role will suit him.
