Born in Constantinople, Turkey, on 11 July 1941, he moved to Greece in 1964. He studied at Konstantinos Demopoulos' drama school and made his professional film debut in *Oi stigmatismenoi* (1966). Over a career spanning 1966 to 2013 he appeared in close to 100 films, television series and plays. He was a regular in the films of Theodoros Angelopoulos from *Megalexandros* (1980) onwards, including *Landscape in the Mist* (1988). Fluent in Greek, Turkish, French, Italian and Spanish, he took roles in international productions such as *Midnight Express* (1978), *Captain Corelli's Mandolin* (2001) and *Munich* (2005).
