## Fi1m on Mike Myers

> Mike Myers gives ridiculous people enough conviction to make them agreeable company. We enjoy him most when a director keeps the routines moving and another actor can answer back; the repetition and lazy jokes need firmer handling.

Wayne Campbell makes a statement, then knocks it down with a blunt ‘not’. In *Wayne's World* (1992), Mike Myers gives this reversal just enough certainty to make its stupidity funny. We laughed at the sheer bluntness of it, then found that repetition wore the pleasure away. Alongside Dana Carvey's Garth Algar, though, Myers remains agreeable company: both actors play the foolishness without making every exchange feel like a demand to be applauded.

Penelope Spheeris gets the best out of that partnership by keeping the sight gags brisk and letting supporting actors change the pace. Myers shares the screenplay credit with Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner, and the thin story leaves the direction plenty to do. Tia Carrere's Cassandra holds her own against the double act, giving us welcome company beyond the boys' routines. Rob Lowe's Benjamin Kane also helps vary the rhythm before the central partnership becomes exhausting.

*Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery* (1997) gave his fondness for exaggerated voices more room, with Myers playing both Austin Powers and Dr. Evil and also writing the screenplay. The trilogy ran from 1997 to 2002, while *Shrek* (2001) made a working-class Scottish voice central to his animated title character. British pop-culture parody and affectionate caricature recur in his work. The danger is that a distinctive voice can become an excuse to keep saying the same things. The lazy jokes about women in *Wayne's World* are an early reason to want someone to question the material.

Supporting roles have offered another use for him, from General Ed Fenech in *Inglourious Basterds* (2009) to Walter Yetnikoff in *Michael* (2026). In the latter, directed by Antoine Fuqua, Myers has a fine time as the record executive. The business scenes are among the film's most detailed, and he is a welcome presence in a biography we otherwise find wanting. That small pleasure is not enough for us to recommend it. Start with *Wayne's World*, and take the opening exchanges as a fair warning.
