## Biography

Mikhail Kaufman (also credited as Mikhail Abelevich Kaufman) was a Soviet cinematographer, photographer and film director. He was the younger brother of filmmaker Dziga Vertov.

After returning from the Russian Civil War in the 1920s, Kaufman joined Vertov’s newsreel series *Kino-Pravda* as a cameraman. He served as cinematographer on several of Vertov’s films, including *Man with a Movie Camera* (1929), in which he also appeared on screen as the cameraman.

Kaufman directed films including *Moscow* (1927), *In Spring* (1929) and *An Unprecedented Campaign* (1931). He continued working as a cinematographer and director until the late 1970s.
