He was born in Moscow on 25 April 1940 and died there on 16 July 2007. He graduated from the Shchepkin Drama School in 1963 and joined the Maly Theatre, where he remained until 1968. He then worked primarily in film, beginning with a role in *Our Common Friend* (1961). His film roles included Foma in Andrei Tarkovsky's *Andrei Rublev* (1966), Nestor Petrovich in the television series *The Long Recess* (1972), and Krys in *Guest from the Future* (1984).
