## Biography

Millard Kaufman was an American screenwriter. He wrote the screenplay for the first Mr Magoo cartoon short, *Ragtime Bear* (1949), and lent his name to the screenplay credit for *Gun Crazy* (1950), which was the work of blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo. He later petitioned the Writers Guild to restore Trumbo's credit.

Kaufman served in the US Marines during the Second World War. He worked for many years at MGM as a script doctor and received Academy Award nominations for the screenplays of *Take the High Ground!* (1953) and *Bad Day at Black Rock* (1955). His other film credits include *Raintree County* (1957), *Never So Few* (1959), *The War Lord* (1965) and *The Klansman* (1974).

In later life Kaufman published two novels, *Bowl of Cherries* (2007) and the posthumous *Misadventure* (2010). He was born on 12 March 1917 in Baltimore and died on 14 March 2009 in Los Angeles.
