## Fi1m on Millard Mitchell

> Millard Mitchell played the man behind the desk: the general, the studio boss, the prospector who knows the ground. He never carried a film and never needed to. His job was to make the star's world plausible, and he did it thirty-odd times in eleven years.

Watch him in *Singin' in the Rain* (1952). He is R.F. Simpson, the head of the studio, and sound has just arrived to spoil his year. Everyone else in the building is having fun; he is the one who has to pay for it, and Mitchell plays him as a businessman a beat behind the joke. The mouth stays firm, the eyes drift slightly to the side, the panic is kept just under the collar. Gene Kelly gets the numbers. Mitchell gets the pauses, and he knows to the half-second how long to hold one.

That timing came from the stage. He worked in New York theatre and radio from the 1920s, turned up uncredited in a handful of films in the early 1930s, then vanished from the screen for six years. When he came back in 1942 he brought the fast-talking Broadway manner with him, and Hollywood knew at once what to do with it. Officers, lawmen, executives, prospectors: men who have authority and are a little tired of it. He made roughly thirty features between 1942 and 1953, kept going back to Broadway through the late forties, and was gone by the end of that run.

The other role a reader can click through to is Major General Pritchard in *Twelve O'Clock High* (1949), Gregory Peck's commanding officer. Our review found Peck playing command as a job that eats the person doing it; Mitchell is the man above him who has already been eaten and has made his peace with it. He does not raise his voice. He does not have to, which is the whole point of a general. It is a small part and he treats it as a serious one, and the film is harder and more honest for having him in it.

We laughed at him more than we expected to in *Singin' in the Rain*, and it was because he never once asks for it. He is the straight man in a picture with no shortage of clowns, and the discipline of that, in a film that could have been all clowns, is what makes the studio scenes work.

The films we have not reviewed are where the rest of him lives. He made three with Anthony Mann and one with Billy Wilder, and the Mann Westerns gave him his best-known parts outside the studio boss: High Spade Frankie Wilson at James Stewart's side in *Winchester '73* (1950), and Jesse Tate, a hapless prospector, in *The Naked Spur* (1953), his last major role. The only reservation anyone has ever raised about him is that he stayed a supporting actor to the end. We are not sure that is a reservation. There is no Millard Mitchell film. There are a good many films that would be thinner without him, and two of them are among the best we have written about. Start with the studio boss, then the general; if you want more, Mann is where to look.
