## Biography

Millen Brand was an American novelist, screenwriter and poet. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and graduated from Columbia University.

Brand's first novel, *The Outward Room* (1937), dealt with mental illness and became a bestseller. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1948 film *The Snake Pit* with Frank Partos, based on Mary Jane Ward's novel; the film received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. His later novel *Savage Sleep* (1968) also addressed psychiatric institutions. He worked as an editor at Crown Publishers from the early 1950s until 1974.
