## Biography

Millicent Martin is an English actress, singer and comedian. Born Millicent Mary Lillian Martin on 8 June 1934 in Romford, Essex, she trained at the Italia Conti Stage School and began her career in the chorus and on stage, including a Broadway debut in *The Boy Friend* (1954).

She rose to prominence in Britain as a performer on the BBC satirical series *That Was the Week That Was* (1962–63), for which she won a BAFTA Television Award in 1964, and starred in her own series *Mainly Millicent* (1964–66). Her film roles include Siddie in *Alfie* (1966), as well as appearances in *Nothing But the Best* (1964) and *Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines* (1965).

Martin received Tony Award nominations for her Broadway work in *Side by Side by Sondheim* (1977) and *King of Hearts* (1978). She later appeared in recurring roles in American television series including Gertrude Moon in *Frasier* (2000–04) and Joan Margaret in *Grace & Frankie* (2017–22).
