## Fi1m on Milo Parker

> Milo Parker brings an unforced manner to inquisitive boys and fits comfortably into a busy ensemble. We rate his contribution to *The Durrells*, where he helps make a quarrelsome family enjoyable company.

In *The Durrells* (2016), the children keep interrupting any prospect of peace, and Milo Parker’s Gerald is a welcome part of the nuisance. With Josh O’Connor, Daisy Waterstone and Callum Woodhouse, he makes the family’s squabbles enjoyable enough to outweigh our reluctance to live alongside them. We warmed to their disorder because the affection survives the quarrels without anybody having to become better behaved. That owes much to Simon Nye’s writing. Parker works well within this busy family, without making his own contribution feel forced.

His early parts often called for an inquisitive or resourceful boy, in settings that gave those qualities something to do. His feature debut, *Robot Overlords* (2014), put him in science fiction; Tim Burton’s *Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children* (2016) put him in fantasy. Between them, he played Roger Munro opposite Ian McKellen in *Mr. Holmes* (2015), where his natural presence was already an asset. Gerald offered a longer stretch: four series of *The Durrells*, running from 2016 to 2019.

Playing Gerald, a young naturalist, also meant extensive work with live animals, a practical demand worth remembering when judging how relaxed a performance looks. The animals give *The Durrells* welcome variety and keep the family arguments from having to supply every laugh. Parker belongs comfortably in that mixture, although we would not credit him with carrying the programme. Keeley Hawes’s harassed, affectionate mother remains its strongest attraction. Nor does the cast quite solve the leisurely pacing or the tendency to let Corfu do too much of the work.

His adult credits include Alistair Taylor in *Midas Man* (2024), though the limited critical attention to these roles gives us less ground for judgement. We would want to assess those performances on their own terms, without expecting another Gerald simply because that part suited him. Start with *The Durrells*, allowing for its pace and the considerable amount of family fuss.
